What is the Miura Kaigan Cherry Blossom Festival?

In 1997, the Miura Kaigan Business Council was formed to revitalize the Miura Kaigan (beach) area.

At the end of 1998, when we used a large cherry tree that had been cut out for an illumination project in front of Miurakaigan Station, many people responded by saying, "I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers bloom in spring!" Therefore, we visited Kawazu Town of Shizuoka prefecture, because we wanted to plant Kawazu cherry blossoms, which bloom in winter. We experienced the charm of Kawazu cherry blossoms there and made a decision to create a village where cherry blossoms bloom.
With the cooperation of Keikyu Corporation, about 100 saplings were planted in 1999, including Kawazu cherry blossoms in the square in front of the station and on the platform. Mr. Koike, who lives in Yokohama, who learned about the initiative, donated about 200 cherry tree saplings and planted them in Komatsugaike Park. About 1,000 Kawazu cherry trees, known for their early blooming, were planted by the members along about 1 km along the railway line from Miurakaigan Station to Komatsugaike Park. Along with the rapeseed flowers that are planted every year, you can enjoy the colorful scenery and the scent of spring.

The Cherry Blossom Festival has been held since 2003. Today, around 300,000 tourists visit Miurakaigan during the period, and it has become an early spring tradition.
